A Parent’s Guide to 5th Grade

Fifth Grade Expectations
Newport Elementary School
Ms. Allison Smith

I am pleased to take the opportunity to welcome you and your child to my 5th grade class!  A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort between parent, child and teacher.  I expect great things from your child this year and likewise expect good conduct and work ethic from them everyday.  With your participation in and out of the classroom, we can look forward to a fun year together!

 Homework

Completing homework is the responsibility of the student.  If they fail to complete homework, it will be noted daily in their Student Agenda. Homework/Projects will also be posted on the class websites and can be accessed through the NES School Website.

 Agendas

Students are responsible for recording all homework and project requirements in their Agendas.  When students meet daily expectations and requirements (homework is returned and behavior is acceptable) I will make note of that in their Agendas. In the event that homework is not returned or incomplete, or your child does not adhere to classroom expectations, a note will be written in your child’s agenda.  Read and sign your child’s agenda every night to keep informed.

 Communication

Student Agendas will be our main form of communication.  Please check and sign your child’s agenda daily.  For your convenience my email addresses is as follows:

 Weekly Folders-

Your child’s graded work is sent home every Tuesday.  Work should be reviewed with your child. Important letters may be included in this folder.  Even though I make great efforts to comment on all graded student work, feel free to email or call if you have questions or concerns.

 Classroom Behavior Expectations

I believe that along with the academics your child will learn in fifth grade this year that making good behavior choices is something that many students need to learn/practice as well.  Our classroom behavior plan focuses on teaching the behaviors we want to see.  My goal is to positively recognize students that are using manners and practicing responsibility but if need be, reteach and review acceptable behaviors.  I will spend a great deal of time discussing and practicing “helpful” behaviors as well as employing techniques to resolve problems.  I will notify you in the event your child is not complying with classroom behavior expectations.  Read and sign your child’s agenda every night to keep informed.

A verbal warning will be given when there is misbehavior.  Following that warning, the student will receive a signature in their Student Agenda, while a student’s third offense will result in silent lunch and/or no free time.  Although I do not anticipate this happening, a student’s 4th offense will result in a visit to the Hawk Center.  All misbehavior and missed homework assignments will be noted in your child’s Agenda every day.  For this reason, please check and sign your child’s Agenda daily.  *Unless a child’s misbehavior is severe, and warrants explanation, all marks will be noted in abbreviation form to save instructional time.  Note the abbreviations below.

Honorable Hawks

Two points are given daily for conduct and work ethic.  At the end of the nine weeks, at least 77 of the 90 points are required in order to qualify for Honorable Hawks.

Absences -

Be sure to send in a written excuse the day your child returns stating the cause of absence.  This may be done in your child’s Agenda.  If your child is picked up early, please sign them out in the office and they will contact the classroom.  A child is considered absent if they do not show up before 11:30 a.m.  That also means if you check your child out before 11:30, he/she will be considered absent.  Also, students are not allowed to ride an unassigned bus in the afternoon unless it has been cleared by the office.

Attendance/Tardies-

School begins promptly at 7:45 a.m.  It is important that your child arrives to school on time. Not only is chronic unexcused tardiness a hardship for your child, who may have to scramble to catch up missed work, but is a distraction to the other children in the class who may have to wait for me to “fill-in” the tardy student with what class work/skills they may have missed. If your child is early (7:20-7:45), they are to report to the Media Center where they can be supervised by an adult.  In the afternoon, car rider students will be dismissed at 2:50. Bus students will be dismissed later around 2:55 and walkers are dismissed last at 3:00 to avoid heavy traffic safety issues.

Below is a copy of Newport Elementary School’s Daily Schedule
